Future of Display Technology...

Within this digitally-driven revolution, we are seeing technology change in the blink of an eye. Display technology is definitely no exception to this rule. In fact, display technology may be considered one of the front runners for technological innovation.

Display technology is currently focused on low power, low cost, eco-friendly, and reflective displays. Innovative product development is focused on the future of 3D, touchscreen, OLED, and e-paper technologies. Touchscreen and OLED displays are becoming more and more common in applications today such as cellular phones, PDAs, cameras, notebooks, etc. with continuing advancements in both technologies. However, 3D and e-paper displays are less common today but are expected to become more prominent.

The advantage to this technology is they are very low power in a static state and because it is reflective it does not require a backlight. It does and can hold text and images to a screen without drawing power.

So, is paper really on the way out and moving aside for the new e-paper technology? Some say that paper will suffer the same fate as landline telephones. "Markets, Forecasts, Technologies 2010-2020" report by Research and Markets states that out of the technologies that could be suitable for electronic paper applications, electrophoretic displays are seeing the strongest growth. Although currently not available in full color (but available in grayscale), electrophoretic displays found the perfect application in the development of e-book readers. Electrochromic or electrowetting displays, although not yet utilized, are possible candidates for applications that would range from small size such as smart card displays and point of purchase labels to larger size ones such as billboards, posters and signage, train station displays etc.

Display technology is also no stranger to eco-friendly technology advancements such as using LED backlighting for up to 50% less power consumption on average or "presence sensing" energy saving features that automatically turn the screen on and off based on the presence in the room. For television, iSuppli, a electronic research firm, predicts that the percentage of LED-backlit TVs will grow from 3 percent of TV sales in 2009 to 30 percent in 2013.
